Clean is beautiful
ON CLEAN IS BEAUTIFUL CAMPAIGN
USAID through its Cluster Competitiveness Project (CCA) is supporting the Culture of Living, Tourism and Environment Campaign (hereinafter Campaign) that will run from June 2007 to June 2008. The principle objective of the Campaign is to upgrade and promote the general cleanliness and environmental management of the urban, rural and forest recreation areas in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The decision to launch the Campaign was made following a survey the CCA conducted at the beginning of 2007 to measure the results of campaign promoting tourism development in BiH conducted one year before. In the survey, BiH citizens cited the lack of cleanliness of the environment as the second most important obstacle to tourism development; the lack of a nationwide strategy was seen as the greatest obstacle. CCA conducted another survey in May of 2007 focused entirely on cleanliness issues in BiH, against which the effects of the forthcoming campaign will be measured. Two-thirds of citizens are dissatisfied with the state of cleanliness of the BiH environment, and over 80% believe that it is a major obstacle to tourism development.
The Campaign will be implemented in close cooperation with relevant ministries, the Tourist Association in BiH and non-governmental and private sector representatives in BiH, along with the support of two entity public broadcast service providers. It will last until July, 2008. Financial resources necessary for the campaign implementation have been secured by USAID and BH Association of Packaging Waste Management “BIHPAK”.
Concept and name of the campaing “Clean is Beautiful” were defined last year while from March to July, 2008 the campaing will be implemented with tag line “Put the Right Thing to the Right Place”.
The specific objectives of the campaign are: • To increase governmental budgetary allocations for tourism and the environment; • To encourage the improved management and maintenance of urban environments and forest recreation areas; and, • To stimulate and encourage BiH citizens and businesses to behave more responsibly regarding general cleanness and environmental protection.
The Campaign’s target groups are public officials and decision makers in BIH, citizens (the youth in particular), and media. The Campaign will include public debates to discuss more efficient implementation of current laws, the establishment of regional landfills for sanitary waste disposal, educational activities in schools for children and youth, local clean up activities, reports and publications and a public relations and media advertising campaign. It is anticipated that the Campaign will foster a noticeably cleaner and more attractive environment, and, in the longer run, greater growth for the tourism sector.
