“Clean is Beautiful” Kicked off at Sarajevo Conference

The “Clean is Beautiful” Conference that was held on March 18th in Sarajevo Hotel Hollywood marked the beginning of the campaign’s first phase, whose slogan is “Put the Right Thing in the Right Place”. This phase will last until the end of June 2008.
Through the campaign, BiH tourism and environmental ministries, with the support of BIHPAK (the Association for Packaging Waste Management) and USAID and are encouraging BiH institutions and the general public actively to participate in resolving environmental cleanliness and sustainability issues, considered by citizens to be a leading obstacle to tourism development, according to recent polling.
“As private sector representatives we are pleased to offer support to this and other similar activities designed to promote environmental development in our country,” stressed Sabina Abdagic Steta, BIHPAK representative. “Establishing BIHPAK and participating in this campaign will help us convey the message to the BiH public that business enterprises are ready to take on their share of this responsibility.”
The BiH Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations representative Mr. Reuf Ibrahimbegic, and USAID Mission Director in BiH Mrs. Jane Nandy, opened the conference. Close to one hundred participants had the opportunity to learn from entity ministries, tourism business associations, raw material processors, and NGOs about the wide range of environmental improvement activities currently underway and planned. After selection by a representative commission from a variety of attractive proposals, USAID CCA financed the “Clean is Beautiful” campaign branding concept, which was presented by the Fabrika agency. Visual materials and promotional clips were made available to partners for their use to link to the long-term “Clean is Beautiful” campaign. Numerous initiatives are planned for the coming three months, including projects with primary school students, BH Parliamentary committee debates, spring cleaning activities. A TV, radio, and billboard media campaign is also planned, with funding from USAID, BIHPAK, public waste management companies, and public broadcasting services.
